How To Clean Granite Countertops and Make Them Shine

By | Blog

Cleaning a countertop can sometimes be a frustrating task, especially when you want it to look great. But if you’re looking for quick solutions to make the job easier, should you clean a granite countertop with Clorox wipes? Most people wonder if it’s safe to do so as they clean their countertops.

While cleaning countertops can be a stressful activity, it’s both necessary and worth the extra effort. Getting rid of germs and making your kitchen look clean are some of the benefits of taking the time needed to clean everything up. But not every cleaning agent is the best choice for your countertops, which is why a lot of people find themselves questioning whether it’s a good idea to use Clorox wipes to do so.

Are you wondering how you can clean your granite countertops? Read our overview to learn some of the other ways to keep your countertops looking brand new.

Understanding the Basics of Granite Countertops

Let’s start by discussing the composition of granite. In the most basic terms, it’s a type of rock composed of a variety of minerals, including quartz and mica, thus it’s incredibly hard and durable.

Granite is a natural material that has been used in building for many years. The porousness of granite surfaces can vary, so each surface requires special treatment to keep them clean.

The best strategy is to understand how often to clean the surface of your granite countertop and how to treat specific types of spills and stains.

Tips for Cleaning on a Daily Basis

Homeowners are encouraged to clean granite countertops at least once a day in order to keep your countertops in tip top shape!

The best strategy is to avoid fancy cleaners or abrasive cleaners such as Windex, Dawn etc. Instead, use warm water, a drop or two of mild soap, and a quality microfiber cloth. Just be sure your soap doesn’t contain citrus extracts because they are too acidic for granite countertops and can damage the surface.

Mix the water and soak in a buck and apply to your granite surface with a microfiber cloth. Continually rinse your cloth with clean water so that you’re not pushing around dirty suds and grime.

Once you’ve finished with the soap and water, dry the surface with a dry microfiber cloth. Otherwise, you might end up with water stains.

Dealing With Stains

The best way to deal with stains is to prevent them. After all, stained granite can be a headache. That’s why it’s a smart move to always keep drink coasters within reach. You should also wipe up liquid spills right away.

Never use products like bleach or other generic stain removers on granite countertops, because you might end up simply creating a bigger problem than you started with. Should you come across a stain you can’t seem to wipe away, contact us to make sure we can help restore your countertops.

Tips on How to Clean Granite Countertops

These tips will help keep your granite countertops in grand condition. Remember, although granite is very durable, it is not indestructible. It’s important to wipe them clean to avoid staining, and using the right cleaners will help keep its shine for many years to come. The difference between Quartz and Granite

By | Blog

One of the biggest questions we hear in our showrooms is “what’s the difference?” And we get it- with so many options to choose from, knowing what sets them apart is the first step towards choosing the right material for your lifestyle. At Onslow Stoneworks, we have the answers. Starting with Quartz and Granite, we can tell you anything you might need to know when it comes to the appearance, durability, and maintenance of each material.

Appearance

Granite is a natural stone, while quartz is man-made. This means that granite comes in a variety of naturally beautiful colors and patterns that are more uniform than quartz, which has a wider range of colors. Granite also has a more natural appearance: looking at it closely, you can see unique textures and veins within the stone. No two granite slabs will be identical. Quartz will have an even-toned color throughout its surface (which makes it easier to clean), and can easily replicate patterns like marble. Because it is man-made, it can be easier to find the right slab of material compared to granite, as you can easily customize quartz to your liking.

Durability

Both quartz and granite are extremely durable, but granite is more heat resistant than that of quartz. Granite is also resistant to scratches and staining, but when it comes to comparison, quartz takes the cake.
Quartz is much harder than granite, so it is much more resistant to stains and scratches. Unlike natural stone, like granite, because of quartz’s non-porous nature, it is able to protect itself from liquids seeping into the surface which helps fight stains and other unwanted bacteria and odors. Although quartz is very tough when it comes to stains and scratches, you might want to keep those heat pads on hand and never place hot cooking materials directly on your quartz countertops, as these surfaces are not as heat resistant as granite countertops!

Maintenance

Granite is easy to maintain, just clean with warm water and mild soap. We do recommend granite be resealed every few years, as doing so will help keep the countertops not only shiny and polished, but its porous nature to be protected. Quartz requires little to no maintenance nor sealant as it is a non-porous stone that does not absorb stains or odors.

The main difference between the two materials really comes down to your lifestyle and what you need out of your countertops. We’re happy to help you with your next home project, so make sure to contact us with any further questions!

Granite Countertops

Granite is a terrific stone for a more traditonal appearance. Adding natural stone to a kitchen makeover is fantastic for maximizing return on investment. Investing your tax refund in granite counters is a great idea! You will receive low costs, high quality, and longevity.

Marble Countertops

Marble countertops are noted for their unique veining, distinguishing them from other countertop materials. Marble is a luxurious natural stone that will enhance any interior design. According to kitchen remodelers, a 15% investment in your home’s worth might yield an ROI of up to 80%. Quartz Countertops

According to Caesarstone, home buyers will likely choose properties with quartz countertops over other materials even if the price of the home is slightly higher. Because it is a manufactured product, quartz offers a wide range of hues, several finish options, and its final appearance is rich and luxurious.

According to Insider.com, conservation and reused materials were both big themes at this year’s Kitchen and Bath Industry Show! With sustainability being one of the key trends at KBIS 2022, it’s safe to say that going green isn’t going anywhere anytime soon!

Customizable and eco-friendly, recycled countertop surfaces are easy to maintain and look great in any space.

Perks and Benefits:

These unique surfaces are composed of recycled glass and quartz and bound by resin. By choosing recycled surfaces you are not only cutting down on our planet’s waste, but you are also choosing a surface that will benefit your family and their health. Similar to quartz countertops, recycled surfaces are non-porous, making them a top choice for keeping bacteria away. These eco-friendly surfaces are also very durable as they are heat and stain-resistant.

Care

Not only are recycled surfaces well-loved because of their durability but also because of their low maintenance! Routine cleaning requires only a soft cloth, mild soap, and warm water. Although this countertop material is stain resistant, it’s not completely stain-proof. To prevent stains, spills should be cleaned as soon as possible. For stubborn stains, you can use a non-abrasive brush. Always remember to use hot pads, trivets, cutting boards, and coasters for additional protection to ensure the longevity of your countertops.

Eco Friendly Kitchen Countertops

Sealing and Finishes

As mentioned above, recycled surfaces are non-porous and do not require sealing. Like other countertop options, this material can also come in different finishes. Finish options include gloss, semi-gloss, and leathered.

Applications

Recycled Surfaces are available in a variety of designs and patterns that elevate the look of any room. A great choice for residential and commercial spaces, these surfaces are commonly used indoors as countertops, vanity tops, bar tops, fireplace surrounds and tub decks, wall cladding, entryways, and shower surrounds.

Four Home Renovations to Consider in 2022

By | Blog

New year, new home improvement renovations! As we kick off 2022, you may be thinking of putting your home on the market and eager to boost its value — or maybe you’re just ready for an upgrade!

With so many changes in the past couple of years, many homeowners have been faced with the need for more space. Keep reading to learn more about the leading home renovation projects for the upcoming year, according to experts.

1.Update Your Bathroom

According to a study conducted by Zillow and Realm, bathroom remodels are the most popular project homeowners are looking to tackle. A Houzz 2021 bath trends report also states that sinks and faucets are the most popular bathroom upgrade.

Updating your vanity is one of the quickest ways to change the look of your bathroom without undertaking an entire remodel and it’s budget-friendly. Customize your vanity with marble countertops to really turn your bathroom into a spa-like oasis!

2. Add More Storage

Doesn’t it feel like we’re always looking for additional kitchen storage? Increased kitchen storage is an absolute necessity in 2022. In the last few years, butler pantries have established themselves as one of the must-have items in modern homes. Upgrade your current kitchen pantry to include custom countertops, shelves, and drawers to create a functional and well-organized space.

Kitchen islands also work best when designed to your specific needs. Consider including built-ins or cabinets that allow you to get the most storage! Pair it with a natural stone or quartz countertop from Onslow Stoneworks to maximize your kitchen’s functionality!

3. Modernize Your Kitchen Appliances

When searching for a new home, most prospective homeowners say that they would spend more on a house with updated appliances. The trick is to go for quality pieces instead of focusing on trends.

Kitchen appliance trends may come and go, like air fryers or stand mixers. Focus on investing in the big appliances — your stove, fridge, dishwasher, etc. — before you splurge on the fun stuff.

4. Upgrade Your Lighting

New lighting is a simple way to refresh your outdated space. Statement lighting that focuses on unique designs, shapes, and sizes is big for 2022. Look for interesting pendant lights, retro Edison bulbs, or even think about putting in a chandelier.

Tips To Keep Your Kitchen Safe This Holiday Season

By | Blog

As the holiday parties commence and you scramble to prepare meals and feed guests, your kitchen is going to be working overtime this month. With more cooking, baking and people coming in and out of the kitchen, it’s crucial to ensure your space is as safe in order to avoid any accidents. Check out these 6 simple tips on how to keep your kitchen safe and your holidays happy!

1. Test Smoke Detectors

Before you start baking your holiday treats or signature dishes, make sure your smoke detectors are working properly and that the batteries have been replaced. Not only will this keep you and your guests safe from a potential fire, but you’ll also avoid hearing that annoying beeping sound during your party!

2. Unplug Appliances

Even when not turned on, small appliances continue to draw electricity when plugged into an electrical outlet. It is best to unplug any small appliance like toasters, coffee pots, slow-cookers and air fryers when they are not being used to avoid any potential hazards.

3. Dress the Part

When cooking, it’s best to wear close-fitting clothing that cannot easily get caught on handles. Use oven mitts if you are handling hot pots and pans. If you have long hair, be sure to keep it out of your way. Also try to avoid wearing loose jewelry, for extra precautions!

4. Be Mindful of Children

If children are included in your holidays, make sure to keep them away from the kitchen during cooking times. Hot stovetops and ovens, high-temperature foods, matches, lighters and candles are just a few of the potential dangers if not properly stored or managed – especially for children. These precautions should be extended to adults, too.

5. Invest in a Fire Extinguisher

Owning a fire extinguisher and keeping it close in your kitchen will prevent an unexpected kitchen fire from escalating too quickly. Store your fire extinguisher in a place that has easy access and let your family members know where it is located and inform them on the proper way to use it.

6. Stay Clutter-Free

Be sure to clean your cooking areas throughout the day, keeping them clear of food debris, utensils, dish towels and other materials that are easily flammable.

So next time you are in the kitchen prepping for friends and family to gather around in the kitchen, implement these easy tips to keep your holiday festivities disaster-free!
