One of the biggest questions we hear in our showrooms is “what’s the difference?” And we get it—with so many options to choose from, knowing what sets them apart is the first step towards choosing the right material for your lifestyle.
At Onslow Stoneworks, we have the answers. Starting with
Quartz and
Granite, we can tell you anything you might need to know when it comes to the appearance, durability, and maintenance of
each material.
Appearance
Granite is a natural stone, while quartz is man-made. This means that granite comes in a variety of naturally beautiful colors and patterns, and no two slabs are identical. Granite has a more natural appearance, with unique textures and veins visible throughout the stone.
Quartz, on the other hand, has a more uniform and consistent appearance. Because it is engineered, quartz offers a wider range of colors and patterns and can easily replicate the look of marble or other natural stones. Its consistent surface makes it easier to match and customize according to your design preferences.
Durability
Both quartz and granite are extremely durable materials. Granite is highly heat resistant, making it ideal for kitchens where hot pans and cookware are frequently used. It is also resistant to scratches and staining when properly sealed.
Quartz is even harder than granite and offers excellent resistance to scratches and stains. Because quartz is non-porous, it does not absorb liquids, which helps prevent bacteria, stains, and odors from penetrating the surface.
However, quartz is not as heat resistant as granite. It is recommended to use heat pads or trivets and avoid placing hot cookware directly on quartz countertops to prevent damage.
Maintenance
Granite is easy to maintain with regular cleaning using warm water and mild soap. However, since granite is a natural porous material, it is recommended to reseal it every few years to maintain its shine and protect it from stains and moisture.
Quartz requires very little maintenance. Its non-porous surface means it does not require sealing and naturally resists stains, odors, and bacteria, making it a convenient and low-maintenance option for busy households.
Which Material is Right for You?
The main difference between quartz and granite comes down to your lifestyle, design preference, and maintenance expectations. Both materials offer excellent durability and beauty, but choosing the right one depends on your specific needs.
